At Twincling we love to tinker and the new Acer Aspire One D150 provided the perfect setting.
We set out to install openSUSE 11.1 on the new Acer netbook and it was an awesome experience ! Here is the hardware specification of Acer Aspire One D150 based on the output of lspci command.

In order to prepare for net based install, we downloaded openSUSE-11.1-NET-i586.iso also referred to as the Netinstall ISO image.
Once the downloaded ISO image is available, we can create a bootable USB stick on Linux. We just used the standard Transcend USB 2G stick.
We used fdisk to create a single partition (/dev/sdb1) of 512M size and set the partition table id as 6 (FAT16).
The USB stick details with partition info is as follows.
# fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Disk /dev/sdb: 2004 MB, 2004877312 bytes
62 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1018 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 3844 * 512 = 1968128 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x6f20736b
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 1 261 501611 6 FAT16
/dev/sdb2 262 1018 1454954 83 Linux
mount -o loop openSUSE-11.1-NET-i586.iso /mnt
/mnt/boot/i386/mkbootdisk --32 --partition /dev/sdb1 /mnt
However, the command above may give an error 'error: activate failed'
One workaround is to copy the mkbootdisk from /mnt/boot/i386/ to your local directory and comment/delete the following line.
""
Now, you'd need to issue the following command
./mkbootdisk --32 --partition /dev/sdb1 /mnt
As this parition needs to be on a FAT16 filesystem, we first proceeded to install the 'sys-fs/dosfstools' and then ran the command.
# mkfs.msdos -F 16 /dev/sdb1
name/IP address of server
mirrors.kernel.org
directory
/opensuse/distribution/11.1/repo/oss/
After a few moments you will see a curses based dialog
'Loading installation system (1/6) 19627 kB'
'Loading installation system (2/6) 36272 kB'
'Loading installation system (3/6) kB'
'Loading installation system (4/6) kB'
'Loading installation system (5/6) kB'
'Loading installation system (6/6) kB'
The files that get picked are
boot/i386/common (19Mb)
boot/i386/root (35Mb)
boot/i386/openSUSE (4Mb)
boot/i386/??? 1Mb
boot/i386/branding (3Mb)
boot/i386/??? 52kB
Once these files are downloaded, the installer checks if there are any modules (device drivers) are required. Press [ok] on the dialog.
Now the user friendly and well thought off, openSUSE installer kicks in with the correct display font size and resolution. The installer is very spiffy and has a racy feel to it. We're using the keyboard accelerator to go even faster.
The first and very important choice to make is regarding the desktop environment. At the top level you can select KDE 4.1 (which is what we did) or you can select other and go for KDE 3.5 or Xfce. KDE is a useful desktop thanks to the awesome Qt library.
The expert partitioner makes certain recommendations. We followed the following approach wherein all the partitions are primary.
/dev/sda1 6 GB Vendor (no change)
/dev/sda2 18 GB Windows (resized)
/dev/sda3 123 GB Linux (ext3, /) (new partition)
/dev/sda4 2 GB Swap (swap) (partition)
You may prefer to create /, /usr, /var, /tmp etc. Well thats your choice :)
Post partitioning, there is hardware detection and choice of the various packages. We didn't select any packages as thats a time waster. We just went ahead with whatever the installer selected. Lets get to the package download (more than 1020) and installation.
Once the installation was complete, the system was required to reboot and when it came up, networking, WiFi (Atheros chipset) and display was working out the box. This is mostly normal if you are using openSUSE which is best known for very polished interface, excellent tools and incredible community.
Here is the 'dmesg' output of the boot process.

We also created a slideshow of the various photos taken of the Netbook at the time of the installation and while openSUSE 11.1 was running. Take a look at http://picasaweb.google.com/twincling/AcerAspireOneD150OpenSUSE111
openSUSE 11.1 on Acer AspireOne D150 Netbook rocks and especially if you got Atheros chipsets you're going to have an enjoyable experience.
Still got questions or need clarifications, please consider joining the Twincling list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/twincling for further assistance.
